Barscobe Castle dates from the 1648 and provides luxury accommodation for 9 in a truly authentic historical building.
The Castle is listed Grade A by Historic Scotland as having features of outstanding architectural importance. While staying you will be able to enjoy the castles features including Great Hall, rough solid stone circular stairway and imagine the tempestuous times of the Scottish Covenanter wars which necessitated the need for such fortified tower houses. The castle was built by William MacLellan who was a leading Covenanter and part of the Pentland rising, later murdered by a Covenanter associate after MacLellan changed allegiance from the Covenanters to the Crown to avoid being hung drawn and quartered.
Belaying its previous rough life, the castle now offers all necessary facilities for you to have a wonderful stay and superb family holiday. These include a beautiful modern kitchen with dining area on the ground floor; the Great Hall is at the 'safe' first floor level and provides a large space for all to relax in while enjoying its historic atmosphere with a wooden floor, low beamed ceiling and original large inglenook fireplace and open fire.
There is a large expanse of garden ground adjoining the Castle which is quietly and privately positioned on the 800 acre Barscobe Estate. There are pleasant walks over the Estate along the level track to Barscobe Loch or woodland paths to discover the impressive waterfalls in Garple Glen (watch the path edges) and for the fit a rough walk to the top of Barscobe Hill giving panoramic views over the countryside (enjoy the view while you catch your breath). Trout fishing is available on the Loch.
The Castle makes a great spot for star gazing but more organised events arrangements for this may be found at Kiroughtree Visitor Centre in the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park itself. The Park also provides superb opportunities for enjoying all outdoor pursuits such as walking mountain biking and wonderful wildlife including Red Deer, Red Kite, if lucky a Golden Eagle, kingfishers, Otters and many more. The nearby Solway coast boasts many quiet and peaceful beaches, together with all the water sports that you would expect. Loch Ken, just 5 miles, has specialist centres for water-skiing, sailing and water based activity centre.
The local area provides much of interest for days out including historical sites such as Threave Castle, Castle Douglas, Dumfries House, Cumnock or following the various Rabbie Burns trails. Taking time to explore the small Galloway towns like New Galloway, just 4 miles away on the other side of the valley or Kirkcudbright on the Dee Estuary is also well worth doing.
