Northton is situated on the west side of South Harris at a little peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic's clear turquoise waters, the large estuary, full of waders, the Norhton's 'Saltings', the abundancy of the beautiful flowering machair in spring and summer, the purple flowering heather in August and there are hidden beaches, jewels not to be seen from the road. At a walking distance from the cottage you will love it to walk to the Temple, an old ruin based on a Broch dating back at least to Viking times. The walk to the Temple (and beyond) is spectacular beautiful with views towards Pabbay and islands beyond. For sure you will enjoy the jewels of these isolated and secluded unspoilt beaches which are still the same as thousands of years ago.
Most of our guest love to climb the nearby mountains and on a clear day you can even see St. Kilda at the distance. Northton is a traditional crofting village and home to three weavers, designing their own Harris Tweed inspired by the beautiful blue/green colours of the ocean, delicate creams and whites of the beaches, autumn browns and the rich shades of greens. If you feel like painting to capture the atmosphere and need some advice, just enquire for a painting workshop for beginners or to upgrade your technique.
Home grown food, fish, mussels, hand dived scallops or cooked lobster, home baking and fresh daily bread you might find it across the road at Steve and Julie's stall or at the Temple Cafe 200 m. from the cottage where Gail serves healthy organic food and caffee's and teas. Both are known for their tasty evening meals. Or treat yourself to dinner at Scarista House.
In summer you might like to swim in clear clean waters of the turquiose coloured ocean. Maybe you like to go kayaking, seal watching and/or fishing, Archery with Harris Outdoor Centre at Leverburgh. Go to inhabited islands, feel overwhelmed by wildlife, the Golden Eagles, otters playing in the ocean, seals, whales, fish from a boat with Gannets diving next to you, walk the immense vast sands of the beaches surrounding the cottage.
In winter star gazing, even watching the spectacle of the Northern Lights is fantastic!
Northton is, as our guests say, the best place to stay, a great base to start exploring Harris, Lewis and maybe the Uists.
