Helmsdale has a population of around 800 and is situated on the world famous NC500. Helmsdale has much to offer tourists and visitors. For the fisherman there is three quarters of a mile of excellent fly water with some reliable fish-holding pool; permits for fishing available in the village shop for Lower Helmsdale known as the Town Water. There is also a golf course (nine hole golf course) on the doorstep. The village itself has The Timespan Heritage Centre, pubs and restaurants, cafes and shops including the La Mirage restaurant known throughout the Highlands. There is a local grocery store, fish and chip shop and medical centre. Buy a local licence for a minimum fee and go panning for gold in Kildonan Burn.
