One of only two inland lighthouses in the whole country, which has been renovated with great care from the historical ruin it once was.
Accommodation: 2 bedrooms, 1 double, 1 twin (sleeps 6)
We are lucky enough to see some truly wonderful houses in our never ending search for great holiday homes. Just occasionally we are blessed to find a cottage that surpasses even our standards! Bona Lighthouse is a prime example.
A listed building, this is only one of two inland lighthouses in the country and it has been lovingly and expertly brought back to life from the ruin it once was. The house sits on the very edge of the north end of Loch Ness where the Caledonian Canal runs north to Inverness. The views down the loch are truly spectacular and on a clear day you can see miles down the water to the other end of the loch. At the side of the house you can see the boats travelling into or out of the canal or just sit at the patio on the loch’s edge and soak in the view. A small beach area is within a moment’s walk and because the house sits down a private driveway there is a sense of peace and quiet here, despite the fact you are only 10 minutes from Inverness.
Inside, the house matches the location – superb! The main building reveals its historical past with hexagonal shaped master bedroom and sitting room. The master bedroom still has a light at the window and a carefully placed bed so you can wake in the morning and look at the views. The presentation is stylish, quirky, immaculate and very, very comfortable. From sumptuous beds with crisp white linens, to a cosy wood burner, for cool evenings. The style is eclectic and fun as well as luxurious. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms this is an ideal house for a family or two couples. Next door is the smaller Stables – a perfect romantic retreat or for use as an overflow to Bona Light house.
If you can tear yourself away from this house, then take a cruise down the loch or a day trip to Skye and the west coast. Visit Inverness for all the facilities you could want or explore to the north – this is a perfect jumping off point and heaven to return to.
