Come and stay in your own magnificent Scottish castle, still owned and lived in by the Urquhart family who built it in 1604.
Craigston Castle is thought to belong to the Bell group of Scottish castles , forming according to H. Gordon Slade, “perhaps Scotland’s finest and the most distinctive contribution to Western architecture”. The castle is still lived in by the Urquhart family which is one of the oldest in Scotland and can be traced back to Adam Urquhart the sheriff of Cromarty in 1357. However, according to the great sir Thomas Urquhart, translator of Rabelais, the family can be traced back to Adam and Eve through Esormon, Prince of Achaia married to Narfesid, Sovereign of the Amazons, and one who found Moses in the bulrushes, as well as many other remarkable ancestors. This fantastic claim is symptomatic for the family’s fondness for the romantic and strange.
As guests of the Urquhart family you will have your choice of rooms each beautifully decorated with well crafted period furniture including modernized original four poster beds. Each room has a dedicated bathroom. Favorites include the, Fraser Room, Kings room, Blue room and White Room.
In the evening you can sit by a roaring log fire in the drawing or anti-drawing rooms and enjoy a good whisky from one of the many local distilleries.
The castle has a fully equipped traditional Kitchen, with modern appliances for self catering. Informal meals can be had in the kitchen or more formal once in the dining room at the first floor, where the food is brought up by a “Dumbwaiter”. Experienced waiters can be available.
Your hosts can help you choose from the best local produce (including lamb and Highland beef raised on the estate, wild game, and fresh fish from the nearby fishing port of Macduff, or vegetables from our local supplier of seasonal “organic” vegetables). Complimentary wifi is provided.
Cots for smaller children are available along with Board Games, pool table, few mountain bikes, croquet etc.
