Ten things to do in Edinburgh, close to Craigwell Cottage (lots more ideas on our blog).
1 Take a walk round Holyrood Park and climb Arthur's Seat
3 Visit the Queen's Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse where there are regularly changing exhibitions from the Royal Collection.
5 Use Edinburgh as a base for touring further afield in Scotland. We have a car-parking space for those wishing to drive, or there are many tours from Edinburgh for days out from the Capital City. Some suggestions for you: a one-day tour of Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs with Rabbie's Small Group Tours. For Harry Potter fans - Alnwick Castle and the Borders with Rabbie's. For whisky explorers, and golf fans try the St Andrews, Whisky and Falkland Palace tour with Highland Experience Tours. For young adventurers try Haggis Adventures Nessie Hunting Tour - a trip to Loch Ness to see if you can find the monster!
6 For fans of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books, Edinburgh is a great location to start your adventures - you can even go walking on the Royal Mile in search of Carfax Close ; visit the Battlefield of Prestonpans which features in the second book Dragonfly in Amber and the Starz Outlander TV series; find Claire's Nursing Station at Tranent and find out more about the books on Jamie's Bookshelf and the Edinburgh connection! We're also very happy to recommend local tour guides Anne and Emma of Mary's Meanders who run Outlander location day tours for small groups of up to 6. Or for 'total Outlander immersion', join Helen Fraser of Afternoon Tea Tours who runs a 5-day tour exploring the romantic country of Jamie and Claire.
7 Don't worry if it rains while you're staying in Edinburgh (it is Scotland after all and that's why the countryside looks so green!) - we've got great ideas of things to do within a very short distance of Craigwell Cottage so you won't get wet.
8 The National Museum of Scotland is world-renowned and stages special exhibitions in addition to its own extensive collection. No visit to Edinburgh would be complete without spending some time there and there are great views to be had from the roof garden too!
10 How did we get to number 10 without mentioning Festivals - we have Festivals all-year round in Edinburgh from Edinburgh's Christmas and Hogmanay to Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival and Edinburgh International Festival - all 12 big festivals are featured on Edinburgh Festival City.
We hope this list has sparked some ideas of things you might like to do in Edinburgh - if you would like information on a specific activity or place, do get in touch with us via our 2edinburgh.com website, we're happy to help.
