For parties seeking the freedom of self-catering, Asda’s and Tesco’s both deliver to Cranshaws and the pretty village of Gifford sits 11 miles from the property where you will find two cosy pubs, the Goblin Ha’ restaurant, as well as a charming cafe in the centre of the village, and a small supermarket and post office. Eleven miles in the other direction will take you to Duns which offers a selection of small town shopping set around the charming market square.
More extensive shopping and amenities can be found in Haddington (17 miles) where you will find an excellent selection of grocers, wine shops, florists and butchers sitting alongside charming gift, clothes shops and craft galleries. Relax and watch the world go by in one of the many cafes, delicatessens or tea rooms in the town including Diggory’s or the Peter Potter Gallery with idyllic views over the River Tyne.
Activities and attractions
Cranshaws is an ideal destination for field sports, and a number of local estates offer high quality walked-up and driven shooting for grouse, pheasant and partridge over a wide range of habitats taking in the picturesque valleys and heather clad hillsides of the area.
There is nearby fishing on the River Whiteadder (a tributary of the River Tweed) and a typical pattern sees a run of spring fish from February through to the end of April. From May there is superb sea trout fishing at night with the occasional salmon running throughout the summer. The traditional main run of salmon is at the end of the season with the larger fish entering the river from September onwards.
There are leisurely walking trails directly from the doorstep to more challenging walks in the vast dramatic scenery of the Lammermuir Hills, including the Lauder to Cockburnspath section of the Southern Upland Way. There is a lovely 10 mile hike from Cranshaws which meanders along farm tracks and woodland over the moor to Longformacus taking in the Watch Water Reservoir, or alternatively The Herring Road follows the centuries old trade route travelled by hardy Dunbar fishwives who would carry creels of salted herring all the way from the harbours edge on a 29 mile journey over the Lammermuirs to the market in Lauder.
For the ultimate off-road experience, the Ronnie Dale Driving Centre in nearby Abbey St. Bathans (8.5 miles) offers 4x4 driving adventures for adults under the watchful eye of a personal instructor in 2000 acres of hill and forest terrain, as well as quad bike treks for adults and children around the 500 acre farm estate.
For golfing, there is a nine hole course at Gifford set within a pleasant course of trees and parkland, or try the long established course at Haddington set within the peaceful walled boundary of a former country estate. For something a little more challenging, guests can experience links golf on the coastal courses at North Berwick, Luffness, Gullance, Muirfield, Goswick and Dunbar or head inland to the glorious Roxburghe championship course on the banks of the River Teviot near Kelso.
There is a watersports centre on the Whiteadder Reservoir for sailing while the beautiful sandy beaches at St. Abbs and North Berwick are superb for walking, relaxation or adventure sports. For wildlife, the Seabird Centre at Dunbar or designated nature reserve at nearby St. Abbs are the breeding and nesting grounds for thousands of seabirds, including colourful puffins and inquisitive seals.
For a real taste of Scotland, The Glenkinshie Distillery is 10 miles from Cranshaws where experienced guides will take you on a distillery tour and introduce you to the light, fragrant flavours of lowland malt whisky. The staff here have an excellent reputation and tours can be arranged in different languages if required. Transport can also be arranged for groups who wish to partake in the full tasting experience, or for something truly atmospheric you could even arrange a tasting from the comfort of your holiday home.

High quality bed linen and towels are provided for guests along with guest toiletries. A hairdryer is provided in each bedroom.
Babies and children
The property is well set up for babies and children with two travel cots and two high chairs available on request. This also includes a baby bouncer, play mat, two changing mats, baby bath and bath toys. The games room is very well equipped with toys, books and games. Outdoors there is a large climbing frame with two swings, a slide and a sand bunker in the walled garden.
Strictly two dogs only at a charge of £20 per dog. They must be contained to the porch or utility/laundry room until clean and dry and thereafter kept to the ground floor of the property only.
Wi-Fi and mobile coverage
Wi-Fi is available but speeds can be slower due the rural location of the property. There is mobile reception on the O2 network and some provision on Vodafone. A landline is provided for reasonable use by guests.

Garden and grounds
The property faces out into a large private lawned walled garden which is fully enclosed. There are two separate seating areas with garden furniture, and a charcoal barbecue is provided during the summer months. A fully fenced three acre paddock wraps around the property.
There is plenty of storage for outdoor gear and fishing kit either in the porch/boot room or the laundry/utility room.
Adjacent outbuilding with games facilities for rainy days includes a ping pong table, table football and dart board.
There is ample private parking to the front of the property for four to five cars.
The property is strictly no smoking.
