"the ultimate in Country House Hotels": "The real country house experience in a real country house." "Superb away-from-it-all location in northern Skye."
Historic Greshornish House remains one of Skye’s best kept secrets. Sheltered by a belt of beautiful trees in a secluded, loch-side setting, Greshornish House is not a conventional hotel but a private family home which now offers comfortable 4* Guest Accommodation and makes for an idyllic retreat. The draw of the country house way of life is strong, and to find one that is actually a traditional home ensures that Greshornish has a strong attraction for many of us and adds greatly to the atmosphere. Combine this with the individual character of each of the 6 principal letting rooms, the fascinating history of the house, the comfort of the reception rooms and the excellent food, and the end result is a beguiling experience.
Non-residents are always welcome but there will be days when the house will not be open, so booking in advance is essential. It is nearly always closed on a Monday, for example.
Greshornish House’s seclusion and magnificent setting make it an ideal location for a private gathering of any description, be it a family get-together, a seminar, a meeting or a wedding. For this sort of event the house is available on an exclusive use basis.
There has been a homestead on the site for the better part of 1000 years, and the current house, a traditional white manor house, dates from the 18th century. Samuel Johnson and James Boswell called in at “Grishnish” in 1773, en route to Dunvegan, and later, in the 19th century, it was the home of Kenneth Macleod.
A sense of tranquillity begins to descend the moment you turn off the main road and is complete when you sink into a soft chair in the drawing room. The extreme peace of this hidden away location is almost tangible and really rather special.
The house is generally open from April to the beginning of November but exclusive use bookings and family occasions mean that it is sometimes closed during this time and therefore booking ahead is essential to avoid disappointment.
