The 17th Century stable yard cottage has been upgraded and modernised to ensure a wonderful holiday. The cottage is listed Grade B by Historic Scotland and the refurbishment and modernisation have ensured that original character and architectural features have been retained and complement the neighbouring Adams style Arbigland House (Historic Scotland Grade A) with its historic links to the Scottish Enlightenment and American Independence.
The grounds of Arbigland House are famed for their spring displays of azaleas and rhododendrons and guests have full access to the gardens with paths that lead to a "private" sandy beach; while wandering through the woodlands keep a weather eye for the native red squirrels! The beach on the Solway will instantly give you that happy beachcomber’s feeling with the sound of the sea and call of the curlew together with wonderful views across the waters to the Lake District hills.
The cottage makes a perfect base for exploring Scotland's hidden south western corner and may be booked in conjunction with the adjacent Coachman's Cottage to accommodate a total of 14. By prior arrangement it is possible to provide a catering package for guests.
The famous Southerness Links golf course is close by, together with other less testing courses. A trip to Southerness is also worthwhile for its historic lighthouse which is occasionally opened to allow visitors to climb and see the view. There are marvellous opportunities for other recreational pursuits including wildlife and bird watching with the RSPB Mersehead Reserve just a few miles along the coast. The Reserve is spectacular in winter and spring with thousands of geese and other over wintering wildfowl present. In the summer it is also worth a visit with pleasant walks through the Reserve’s woodlands down to the beach. The RSPB staff run wildlife events throughout the year including dawn walks, pond dipping, and badger watching.
South West Scotland has numerous historic sites to explore including Arbigland House itself (by prior arrangement with the owners) and the neighbouring John Paul Jones Cottage, being the birthplace of the founder of the American Navy. Other notable sites include Sweetheart Abbey in New Abbey together with one of the oldest Corn Mills, both maintained by Historic Scotland and the world's oldest Camera Obscura at Dumfries Museum. Connections with Burns can be explored in Dumfries, at Arbigland itself and other villages including Ellisland Farm at Holywood where Burns lived and wrote for a number of years.
Cycling and walking are particularly well catered for with numerous coastal paths and Forestry Commission Woodlands trails including the 7Stanes Mountain Bike Routes which have been laid out across the region. The closest of these are in Dalbeattie and Mabie Woods, both of which provide superb and spectacular settings for quiet walks or testing strenuous mountain biking routes.
