Jamaica Retreat is a bright, compact, one-bedroom, first floor apartment set in a modern courtyard in Edinburgh’s classical Georgian New Town. Princes Street, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Waverley Station, Edinburgh Bus Station, and the tram line are all within 15 minutes’ walk of the apartment. It is also only 5 minutes’ walk from the apartment to Stockbridge – an area renowned locally for its cafes, bars and a commendable range of small local businesses catering for every need. From here too, there is access to the Water of Leith and its riverside walks to the Shore at Leith, or to the Dean Village and beyond. The apartment is also well located for cinema, theatre and Edinburgh Festival venues.
A small hall area at the doorway to the apartment opens into the sitting room, with leather sofa, armchair, coffee table and small café-style dining table for two. There is a flat-screen TV, including radio and an integrated DVD player. The bedroom and kitchen are accessed directly from the sitting room. The bedroom, although small, has a standard-sized double bed and a small built-in wardrobe. The kitchenette is equipped with a hob, a combination microwave/convection oven, and a fridge with freezer compartment. A kettle, toaster, crockery and cutlery are also provided. The apartment’s bathroom includes a spa-style bath, with an over-bath electric shower and screen. Within the small entrance hallway are two closets housing a washing machine, iron, ironing board, chest of drawers, additional clothes-rail and shelves.
Windows feature in all of this apartment’s rooms. The window in the sitting room looks south over a paved and planted courtyard and beyond to Heriot Row, where once lived Robert Louis Stevenson. The apartment’s other windows look over a mews lane towards Royal Circus, designed in 1820 by William Playfair – most-celebrated of the New Town architects. The apartment has central heating throughout, and a wall-mounted log-effect electric heater to ensure a cosy stay whatever the season or weather. There is also a selection of DVDs and books. As with all our properties, towels, linen, heating, lighting, internet access and a starter pack of tea, coffee, milk, local shortbread etc. are all included.
