NEW FOR 2014 -Kirk Abune The Hill (Church on top of the hill) is a beautifully renovated old kirk situated on the West Mainland of Orkney.
It was the 1st Secession Kirk and was built in 1803, the present kirk being built in 1830 with panoramic views out over the Hundland Loch.
Lovingly renovated to an exceptional standard, with 4 bedrooms (1 downstairs with wet room, suitable for disabled access), open plan kitchen, dining room and living room area. The property sleeps up to 8 comfortably, with a sofa bed providing extra space. Cot and junior bed available for the 'peedie bairns'.
Many traditional features still exist, such as the fantastic arch windows (see photo) and the original staircase.
We are situated 1.5 miles from the town of Birsay, where you can explore the Brough of Birsay, take a stroll along the cliff tops and a great place just to sit and relax. There is a corner shop located in Birsay and also the Barony Hotel, where you can get lunches/evening meals etc.
Other sites close by include Marwick Head, Kitcheners Memorial, Skaill House, Skara Brae and the Bay of Skail (one of Orkney's most beautiful beaches).
The Tingwall ferry to Rousay is a short drive away (5-10 mins) and the quaint town of Stromness is only a 20 min drive. Kirkwall, Orkney's capital town is only 20 miles away.
Swannay Loch and Boardhouse Loch are only 1 mile from the Kirk so excellant for anyone wanting to do some fishing. Close by are RSPB Reserves, so a great spot for any bird watchers. Surfing on the Bay of Skaill is for the more adventurous visitor.
