Perhaps the word ‘unique’ is over-used but in this instance, it is, without doubt completely accurate in the case of Knock Old Castle. The castle dates back to the 14th century and lay as a ruin for many years. Now it has been resurrected into a quirky, luxurious and unique holiday house. Local materials have been used throughout – from estate harvested wood for the beams and doors to local stone and craftsmen. The longer you spend looking inside the castle, the more fascinating detail you will see. Look for the tiny carved yew wood mice and you will not miss the ‘sheep’ grazing on the sedum and wild flower roof.
At a practical level the castle is warmly luxurious with wood burners and delicious locally made beds with wonderful linens to sink into at the end of the day. Take a drink up the stone spiral staircase to the very top where the round benches in the turret make a perfect viewpoint across the sea as the sun sets. Another turret holds a small sauna – space has been well used here! As with all old castles the rooms are relatively compact though the modern addition has created an excellent sitting room and a big kitchen/dining space complete with beams – an essential for 21st century life.
Knock Old Castle looks out across the sea to the Isles of Arran and Bute and Cumbrae. This is an ideal spot to explore the islands and the Trossachs National Park. If golf is your thing then famous courses like Troon, Turnberry and Prestwick are nearby. The path from next door Skelmorlie gives you a 100 miles to cycle or walk. Be sure to visit the National Trust for Scotland’s fabulous Culzean Castle and at a less grand level the ice cream parlour’s of Largs are a treat! Glasgow is a quick train journey and both Prestwick and Glasgow airports are within ½ hour drive. There is a tennis court which can be used by arrangement with the owner.
Outside there are lawns to enjoy as well as a fairytale walk through the woods and over the little stone bridge. The views across to the sea are beautiful and there is a peace and quiet to this lovely rural spot that belies its proximity to the numerous nearby opportunities.
Don’t miss this one – it is exceptional and divine and great fun.
