All true country lovers will queue for this cottage just 5 miles from the main Carlisle/Edinburgh (A7) road and Hawick (6m, all facilities). 1,000ft up in the Border Hills, at the end of a one-mile track – completely hidden from all except skylarks and sparrow-hawks up above – the house has an absolutely stupendous view stretching south-west to the distant hills that border England.
Recently and carefully renovated in a pleasant country style, well- equipped, doubleglazed and with really good central-heating, this light and sunny old stone cottage was originally occupied by the Estate shepherd, and it is still a location where children can run wild in safety. There is a piano and, in the adjoining barn, table tennis and darts, and even a resident owl!
All the historic Border Countryside is on your doorstep here. Loch fishing can be arranged on the Estate. Golf courses of all levels are within easy reach, as are local restaurants and the knitwear and cashmere outlets for which Hawick is famous. This is wonderful riding and walking country, starting right from the door.
Sailors and windsurfers will be able to indulge their passion at St Mary’s Loch while the numerous castles, keeps and stately homes in the Borders will delight history buffs. For those wishing to range further afield, the Solway Coast, Edinburgh, The Lake District and Northumbria are all within easy visiting distance.
