Guests who stay at Mackay’s Rooms in Durness have an opportunity to experience Scotland’s real untamed natural environment in the comfort of world class, honest accommodation featuring true modern highland chic. A warm welcome from Robbie and Fiona Mackay, their family and friendly staff awaits all visitors to their highland retreat.
Sleeping
All seven bedrooms vary in size and shape each individually decorated with their own unique style – a combination of simple luxury and comfort.
Mackay’s Rooms feature individually designed bedrooms – exclusive, elegant and relaxed, packed with charm and atmosphere and brimming with delicate personal touches. Decorated with tweed sofas (quirky chairs are a passion) and oak floors as well as the usual modern technology plus much more, you’ll be kept comfortable and entertained should the Durness weather keep you indoors.
The Rooms offer large handmade feather-topped beds with luxury linens – we also have a couple of feather-free rooms with good old-fashioned luxury merino blankets for our more sensitive guests. The en-suite bathrooms are a dream with oversized baths or showers and Elemis products to enjoy after a long day. At Mackay’s we work endlessly to create a contemporary Highland escape where our guests can feel at home immediately.

Eating & Drinking
While we do not serve dinner at Mackay’s food does still play a big part of the Mackay’s experience. We are passionate about eating: breakfast is the most important meal, and our aim is to awaken your senses and offer a great start to your day with delicious homemade food, freshly prepared every morning using the very best seasonal, local and organic ingredients.
In Sutherland we are fortunate enough to have easy access to an enviable local larder. As the quality of our raw produce is so high, much of our food is cooked simply but with a stylish flair, retaining the natural freshness and flavour. Our breakfast menu changes daily – if you have special dietary requirements please let us know and we will have no problem in preparing something wonderful for you.
Should you require us to we can provide fantastic picnic lunches – perfect if you are out all day in the wilds or planning a romantic trip to Sandwood Bay or Cape Wrath.
We also provide afternoon tea and delicious home baking – highly recommended!
Drinks & Refreshments
We offer full drinks service to our guests. A perfect way to relax after a full day, feet up, peat fire and dram in hand! We also have a good selection of wine and nibbles.
