The cottage is sufficiently distant from our other proprty Tigh Dubh to provide privacy yet the 2 are close enough for 2 families to enjoy a joint family holiday, together with the security and knowledge that the children can be free range as they bounce on the trampoline, play in the Wendy house or have an adventure exploring the croft.
Enjoy the walkways through the growing woodland which has been planted on a third of the croft, stretching from moor to loch with views to the Outer Isles. Spot the flora and fauna that change as the seasons pass: the early summer orchids, to the autumn heathers. Soak up the summer sun, occasional wild autumn winds and the sudden crisp calm of winter. The bird life is ever changing: winter visitors giving way to their summer counterparts, including the distinctive Skylark and the oyster catchers, curlews and sandpipers and herons by the lochside.. Seals, dolphins and otters are sometimes seen playing in the loch.
Shared facilities with Tigh Dubh include a washing machine, dryer and deep freeze, full access to the croft, trampoline and storage facilities for bicycles and kayaks. A cot and a high chair are available on request. Horses and Pets are welcome (for a small extra charge). We can accommodate 2 horses in stables and 4 in a field. Dogs are free to roam on the croft walks but need to be kept on a lead further afield. Extra fire wood is available.
The Merman cottage has been carefully renovated with attention to history and architectural detail and with wood-carvings from local craftsmen. The wood- panelled, open-plan living area, provides a comfortable space in which to relax after a day on the hills, includes a wood-burning stove for colder evenings. There is also a TV & DVD with Freeview, radio and mini sound bar. Board games and a selection of books for all tastes provide entertainment for that odd rainy day. Tiles in the kitchen were hand-made in the local pottery, others were brought back by friends from India. The kitchen is well equipped including dishwasher and all necessary crockery and utensils. The unique wooden spiral staircase leads to a bathroom and two bedrooms, the double one with stunning views over the loch. The smaller bedroom has 2 single bespoke hand made beds while the room itself has access via a hand crafted and designed metal walkway to the cottage's own garden and patio. The garden links to a croft walk and hills. Guests are lulled to sleep by the sound of the burn which runs by the cottage.
There are 2 bathrooms: a small one upstairs and a wet room with shower and sink downstairs. Background heating is from night storage heaters. Electricity is included in the rental as is bed linen and towels.
"Feels as though I've been transported to a different time,"( Lisa from Birmingham).
