Set amidst the beautiful Angus countryside, Muirhouses is a livestock and arable farm traditional to the area, here at the foot of the Grampian mountains.
Muirhouses has been farmed by the McLaren family since the 1940's growing barley for malting whisky, wheat, potatoes, oilseed rape and grass. A suckler cow herd of Angus x Limousins with their calves and a small pedigree herd of Limousin cows make up the livestock part of the farming enterprise.
Muirhouses is the ideal base for golfing, being next to Kirriemiur golf course with its panoramic views of the Grampian mountains, and within easy reach of the Alyth, Rosemount, Edzell, Brechin, Forfar, Carnoustie and St Andrews courses.
Hillwalking, mountaineering, cycling, fishing, touring the castles and stately homes of the area (of which there are many), or just relaxing and enjoying the scenery makes this part of Angus a perfect base.
Excellent home cooking for your breakfast in the morning after a restful night's sleep in the peace of the countryside - only the birds and cows to disturb you.
Look out from your bedroom window to the splendid Kirriemuir golf course with its parkland setting and superb views of the Grampian mountains, or view Caddam Woods of historic McBeth fame, from the spacious family room. The Airlie Monument on top of Tulloch Hill makes a stunning silhouette at the foot of Glens Clova and Prosen.
At Muirhouses Farm, we’re passionate about being green!
Our onsite wind turbine generates most of our electricity and we recently installed a Biomass Boiler so we now use our own home-grown straw and suitable waste materials to heat all the homes on the farm, including Muirhouses B&B and our self-catering cottage, and to supply all our hot water. As a result, the only carbon fuels we use are in our vehicles – and we’re working on that!
It can be very cold in this part of Scotland so, for additional heating, there are wood burning stoves (which burn locally-grown wood) in the farmhouse, farm cottages and all our buildings are very well-insulated.
We use phosphate-free cleaning materials and low-energy lightbulbs – and we’re dedicated recyclers!
In addition, we serve local and home-made products whenever possible, reducing air miles and supporting the excellent local producers in Angus – it’s no wonder guests love Muirhouses Farm breakfasts.
We have just been awarded Gold in the Green Tourism Business Scheme which acknowledges our committment to our guests enjoyment and comfort during their visit to Muirhouses as well to the environment.
