North West Castle once belonged to the arctic explorer Sir John Ross, but is now a welcoming family-owned hotel with over 50 years of experience. You can stay in one of the 72 en suite rooms which are spacious and comfortable - many of them also capture the fascinating history of the building with original windows.
Take advantage of the hotel's leisure facilities and relax in the heated swimming pool or unwind in a peaceful sauna or spa bath. North West Castle is also home to the curling rink, ideal from October to April for keen curlers and those wishing to try something new or you can watch one of the regular competitions from the Alpine Restaurant.
Step into the Ross Bar for a pre-dinner drink during your stay and you'll be astounded - the room was built as a reproduction of Sir Ross's cabin on the ship Victory, and used by him to demonstrate polar navigation to his guests.
Sample the finest produce Dumfries & Galloway has to offer from an imaginative menu, perfectly complemented by an extensive wine list. If you prefer more informal dining, the hotel's Alpine Restaurant is open each year during the curling season and serving favourite dishes from refreshing salads to mouthwatering steaks.
Head out to explore the surrounding towns and drive down scenic country roads to the Mull of Galloway, Scotland's most southerly point, and take in the wonderful views along a cliff top walk or pay a visit to the area's many stunning gardens such as the subtropical Logan Botanic Gardens. Make sure you take time to stop by the town's museum to see the permanent display on the previous owner of the hotel, Sir John Ross.
