Old Balwill, in the countryside 2 miles from Buchlyvie, is a fully modernised cottage which retains the traditional features of what it once was – an old linesman’s cottage.
It is semi-detached with our house but you have your own patio, garden and front door so complete privacy on your holiday and the freedom to come and go as you wish. There are 3 bedrooms, sleeping 6 people.
Old Balwill is peacefully situated in glorious Trossachs scenery, on the eastern edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and makes an excellent base from which to tour central Scotland, visiting Stirling and its Castle; The Wallace Monument; The Kelpies (magnificent 30m horse sculptures); walking through the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park or enjoying a sail on Loch Katrine. The cottage is equally well located for hill-walking and for low-level walks through the forests, for bird-watching, and for sailing, canoeing and fishing on several nearby lochs. In the evening you can come home to the welcoming warmth of the wood-burning stove and to take your pick from the extensive collection of books, CDs and DVDs. We welcome dogs.
We, Rona and John, live next door. We are keen hillwalkers, with an extensive knowledge of the Trossachs.
Stirling, Perth, Glasgow and Edinburgh are easy to reach and Oban, Loch Lomond, Inveraray, Aberfoyle and Callander are close enough for a leisurely day trip.
Walkers are spoiled for choice: there are several Munros and Corbetts within an hour’s drive, so you can make your choice depending on the grade of difficulty you want. Some of the best known are Ben Lomond, Ben More, Ben Vorlich and Ben Vane, as well as The Cobbler.
Nearby villages include Kippen, Doune, Balfron, Balmaha and Drymen, all with interesting shops and pubs. Our nearest village of Buchlyvie is just two miles away and it has a well-stocked store, garage, cafe, hairdresser and pottery with coffee shop, as well as a pub.
If you want to visit castles and historic houses and gardens, then Doune Castle, (the setting for the Monty Python film and Outlander) Stirling Castle and Argyll’s Lodging are all within 15 miles.
The cottage itself has every home comfort and the garden is a very peaceful place to sit and relax so you may want to spend every day at home!
