The Old Mill on the Spey is a fascinating 18th-Century Mill House, located in a peaceful setting right on the banks of the River Spey. Originally built as a corn mill in 1720, the property was extended in the early 1800s to incorporate a sawmill when logs were floated down the River Spey to be milled here. Throughout the turbulent history of the area, the mill has served the local crofting and gentry society alike.
The present owners have lovingly renovated this impressive property to a fantastic standard, which combines the traditional functionality of the mill with a boutique interior. Not only does the décor fuse the atmosphere of a North American ski lodge with that of an old Scottish Sawmill, but the crystal water of the mill race gracefully past the original workings of the wheel.
The 3-level home’s ground-floor lounge is all about homey comfort. Large plush chairs and sofas, walls adorned with sporting artefacts and interesting memorabilia, and hand scraped oak flooring create an air of cosy relaxation. The focal point of the lounge is a large log stove (starter log pack supplied), and there is a 42” flat screen TV + Sky. The well-designed open plan kitchen has an island hob fitted with an integrated bar, so the cook for the evening is not left to toil alone. The kitchen has 2 large ovens, microwave, dishwasher, Belfast sink, beer & wine coolers and a large fridge/freezer along with all of the pots, pans and utensils you will need during your stay. Just off the kitchen is a conservatory dining room with a large family style table that can seat all of the mill’s occupants. This is a superb setting for an evening meal overlooking the mill race running just outside the window and on to adjacent surrounding farmland.
The Old Mill on the Spey has 5 bedrooms, of which 4 have their own en-suite shower rooms with under floor heating and heated towel rail. All bedrooms have flat screen TVs and wardrobe space.
The master suite is immense with a super king-size bed, a large seating area with two leather armchairs, and natural slate flooring with under floor heating. A large picture window overlooks the meandering River Spey and the original mill workings – a glimpse into the fascinating past of the building.
The 2nd bedroom with a super king-size bed and a 3rd bedroom with double bed both come with an en-suite shower room and views on to the river.

Like all of the properties in the Highland Hideouts portfolio, the luxurious relaxation that the Old Mill on the Spey offers is not limited to the interior. Just outside there is a large, double-level decked area with a fabulous eight person hot tub. From this private, tranquil setting you and guests can soak up the view of the River Spey and surrounding countryside while you enjoy that all-important morning coffee or quiet evening “sundowner” as the mill race flows beneath the deck.
