Large group accommodation Scotland accommodates 12 comfortably in a ‘fortalice’, a small castle, located on the edge of the village of Doune. We are part of Inverardoch Estate and the house has a private drive and is set in a secluded walled garden. Old Newton is an ideal self catering property for large groups. Family gatherings or groups of friends. There are 5 public rooms with plenty of space and wonderful facilities including an open fire and 3 wood burning stoves.
Old Newton is described in the Scottish history books as a 16th century L-plan fortalice, although there is evidence for some sort of building on the site from 1435. The house was built for defence and only in the 18th and 19th centuries, were rooms on the ground floor developed for domestic use. All bedrooms are upstairs many of them steep.
It has welcomed some of Scotland’s most illustrious guests including Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the enlightenment philosopher David Hume, and Sir Walter Scott who wrote The Lady of the Lake here. More recently it has been home to the cast and crew of Outlander the popular series written by Diana Gabaldon, who also came to visit. New guests will recognise the many scenes from the first series that were filmed here.
The house sleeps 12 comfortably but can accommodate 2 extra small people.
There are 3 bedrooms in the tower, which has a narrow spiral staircase.
The top floor has the Prince Charles Edward Stuart room, which has a super-king bed.
Below there is the Walter Scott bedroom, which has twin beds.
Next door, the David Hume bedroom also has twin beds.
There is a shower room and a bathroom both with WCs for the use of these 3 bedrooms.
In the centre section of the house, reached by a steep narrow staircase there is an attic bedroom with a large double bed, a single bed and a bathroom, which although not en suite is for private use.
The Chinese room, with a smaller double bed, also has a private bathroom next door.
The Hayloft has a double bed, a single bed and is served by a shower room with WC below.
There are five public rooms. The morning room, the dining room, the music room - with a Steinway piano, the longroom, which as its name suggests is a very large family room with TV and snooker table. Finally at the heart of the house is a good sized kitchen with an Aga. There is also a large scullery for food preparation and storage.
The house has its own chapel, which may be hired for weddings or other ceremonies.
The house is set on a private estate surrounded by acres of parkland. There is a walled garden for the exclusive use of guests. There is parking for about 6 cars.
We have two gardeners who tend to the gardens throughout the year.
