We are a family of six with four children aged 7, 11, 14 and 16, some of us are bilingual English/German. We live in Duns in the Scottish Borders. Duns is a small, pretty town about one hour south east of Edinburgh, close to some of Scotland's best beaches, country houses and abbeys. Our house is a fabulous Georgian villa surrounded by gardens and trees, close to the town centre. We have been hosting guests from abroad for a number of years and I have helped many of them with their English in day-to-day exchanges. I am a qualified teacher of Modern Foreign Languages and in 2014 I completed a TEFL course and have enjoyed getting back to my original dream of teaching English which started 30 years ago when I was growing up in Germany.
An English Language Homestay with our family is not about traditional classroom teaching, but mostly about learning English in an authentic environment in beautiful surroundings in the Scottish Borders. It is best to regard a stay with us as a fun-filled holiday, picking up a wealth of English along the way! Whilst it is possible to have one-to-one English tuition if desired, you will find that most of your learning will be more hands-on and involve everyday activities such as conversations over the dinner table or exploring the local area. Learning days out could include outings to the beach, a trip to Edinburgh, visiting gardens and picturesque towns and abbeys in the Scottish Borders, going for walks and finishing the day with a campfire in the garden. We generally accept learners from the age of 14, although we may consider younger guests too.
