Step back in time and immerse yourself in the wild beauty of the Outer Hebrides at Strome Cottage, one of the last traditional cottages on the Isle of Scalpay. Dating back to 1900, this simple yet soulful home offers an unforgettable stay in a breathtaking natural setting.
Nestled above Scalpay’s tranquil South Harbour, Strome Cottage sits among the moorland and sea lochs. Watch otters, seabirds and seals from the shore, listen to the wind and the birdsong, and reconnect with the rhythms of the land and sea.
The Cottage
We’ve chosen to preserve the original, rustic charm of Strome Cottage—because here, it’s all about slowing down. While the furniture and fittings are older, everything you need for a comfortable holiday is right here.
• Kitchen: Fully equipped with hob, oven, microwave, toaster, kettle, and all the pots, pans, plates and utensils you might need.
• Dining Room: Table and 5 chairs, perfect for shared meals and cosy evenings by the open fire.
• Living Room: Comfy sofas, another open fire, a bookshelf of good reads, a TV with a large DVD selection, and board games for quiet evenings in.
• Bedrooms: One double and one twin room, sleeping up to 4 guests.
• Bathroom: Old-fashioned bath (no shower hose)—ideal for a soak after a walk on the moor.
Access & Setting
Reaching the cottage is part of the adventure! A 130-yard path leads you from the road to the door. It can be muddy or wet in wild weather, so wellies or walking boots are essential.
The location is exceptional—unspoiled, peaceful, and teeming with wildlife. Whether you’re painting, writing, birdwatching or simply sitting with a cup of tea by the fire, this place invites you to slow down and just be.
Please Note
This is a true Hebridean experience: traditional, rustic, and rooted in place. If you’re looking for luxury, this may not be the right stay—but if you’re after authenticity, atmosphere, and a deep connection to nature, you’ll feel right at home.
