The Old Wing is a part of the Drumhead Tower House which dates from the 18th Century. The surrounding gardens and policy woodlands ensure peace and tranquillity. There’s a wild paddock where the owners keep free range chickens and bees and a pretty burn runs through the land.
The spacious accommodation is over three floors and incorporates a ground floor twin bedroom with large en suite bathroom with both bath and separate shower. There is a slate floor to the entrance vestibule and hall which leads to a large Kitchen with electric range cooker and large dining table. The character of the Tower House runs through its entirety with a wide stair to the first floor and a choice of two stairways to the second floor Double and Twin bedroom. One of the stairways is a small circular stair and may have been a “Priests Escape Route”; they would have had to have been quick and nimble on their feet to use it though. The first floor has the principal Double bedroom; family Bathroom and a comfortable Sitting room with views over the garden which makes it an excellent place to sit and watch the wildlife that visits the grounds. The Sitting room’s open fire also creates a cosy atmosphere on a winter’s evening for sitting and relaxing after a day out exploring this part of Scotland.
The location of The Old Wing is one that allows easy access to both the great outdoor attractions of the area but also is such that visits to both Glasgow and Edinburgh can be included to your holiday plans. Locally the Gair Loch has pretty walking trails and the picturesque village of Rhu with its pretty marina and it is still only a short drive to Loch Lomond with all the many attractions and outdoor activities available in Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park. The John Muir long distance trail is close to the house and this provides a walking route through to Loch Lomond for the fit and hardy, a pretty trail leads over to Balloch with beautiful views of Loch Lomond.
Shandon Country Pursuits (6 miles away), on Gair Loch offers clay pigeon shooting, archery, pony trekking and the chance to try some off road driving over some pretty rough, muddy terrain. There is also good fishing from the shores and a trip to the head of Loch Long is worthwhile as boats can be hired at Ardgarten for fishing trips further out on the loch, which is 30 metres deep in places and is very popular with scuba divers.
The village of Cardross has good local facilities including Cardross Inn for food and drink and Cardross Golf Course, which is an undulating parkland course with spectacular views over the River Clyde. Helensburgh is just a 15 minute drive and has a good range of cafés and restaurants including an excellent fish and chip shop and is also the place to stock up on supermarket supplies.
The choice of activities and days out are too many to mention but it is well worth taking the time to visit Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House along with the beautiful walled gardens in the area, such as those found at Geilston House and Ardardan Estate.
