Tigharry Schoolhouse is located on the west side of North Uist in the magical Outer Hebrides. Surrounded by fields, the house overlooks Clettraval hill and Loch Eubhal and is a 15 minute walk to the renowned RSPB reserve at Balranald and the beautiful Hosta beach. The location is very convenient for exploring the very best of the Western Isles; wonderful walks, wildlife and beaches are on the doorstep, while easy day trips via ferry can be made to Harris/Lewis & Barra.
There are two very large double-height living spaces formed from the old schoolrooms: a kitchen-dining room with seating for 10, wood burning stove, floor to ceiling bookshelves and fully fitted kitchen (induction hob and two ovens); and a bright living room with triple aspect windows, another wood burner, comfortable seating on three large sofas, television, a desk/study area and a piano. There is new also a utility room with its own outside access which houses laundry facilities and additional kitchen facilities. This part of the house has a newly installed polished concrete floors and underfloor heating.
The cottage part of the property (formerly the schoolteacher’s lodgings) houses all the bedrooms and bathrooms. Cosy and more traditional in style, it has whitewashed wooden floors and sleeping accommodation for eight people across four bedrooms. Three doubles (one with ensuite bathroom, one with ensuite shower room), plus an additional bedroom with two single beds (and an ensuite shower room). There is also a family bathroom with a freestanding tub, plus an additional guest cloakroom. (Please note an additional 2 beds can be set up if required - please contact us to discuss).
The schoolhouse sits in its own grounds which are surrounded by an old stone wall and comprise the garden immediately around the building, and an adjacent paddock. There is ample outdoor seating in the back garden (table and seating for eight) plus a bbq for guests’ use. From the paddock there is gate access to the fields behind the house through which you can walk to reach the beach. This part of Uist has a wonderful coastline and is perfect for catching amazing wide-sky sunsets. On clear days there are views out to St Kilda and the Monach islands.
The house is set up to be family friendly and is ideal for groups large or small. There is wifi throughout the property, plus board games, several hundred books, outdoor games (football, cricket, kite) which guests are free to use, as well as OS maps and local walking guides. During the season it is possible to fish in Loch Eubhal (directly opposite the house) and there are many other opportunities for outdoor pursuits locally, including sea kayaking, surfing, cycling, angling, shooting, birdwatching and boat trips to the Monach Isles and the world heritage site of St Kilda.
