The farmhouse dates from the 1700s and retains all its original character while offering cosy comfortable holiday accommodation, the days of poor fitting doors and windows allowing you to tell which way the wind is blowing are long gone! The original road north ran by the back door (now the main entrance), as was normal at the time the owners would leave food for passing travellers on a shelf inside the porch. The ground floor features two sitting rooms both with wood burning stoves so larger groups are easily accommodated with space to breathe before coming together as a family in the evenings. The large farmhouse kitchen is spacious and easily seats 8 at the central dining table.
Although you may be tempted to stay in all day enjoying the peace and stunning views the surrounding area does not disappoint! Scotland's culture and history is on your doorstep and can be discovered and enjoyed at many local sites, one of which is Drumlanrig Castle with its beautiful gardens and famous art collection. The highest village in Scotland at Wanlockhead with its sister village of Leadhills is nearby and is the home of Scotland’s Lead Mining Museum which pays tribute to the industrial heritage of the area. In contrast, areas of the former industrial landscape have been transformed with modern landscape art by Charles Jencks at the Crawick Multiverse and is well worth a visit to enjoy the peace and stunning forms that have been created. Thornhill is the principal town of the Upper Nithsdale valley and is a bustling hub with a range of independent shops, pubs, and cafes. The location also allows day trips to Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Clyde coast at Ayr, all which are within an hour’s drive or so.
The area gives an unrivalled cross section of life from days gone by through the industrial revolution to modern life; however, one thing that has not changed is the tranquil beauty that greets all who venture into Southern Scotland. The Solway coast and Galloway Forest Park are within easy reach, the forest is the largest in the UK. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the many activities available on the doorstep with direct access to many hill routes, one of which is a path and track through to the stunning steep sided Dalveen Pass. Throughout the area there are walks and cycle routes with mountain bike tracks for all abilities, the 7Stanes mountain bike trails at both Ae and Mabie Forests are within a short drive, others are within easy. There are also nearby opportunities to try golf, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, and horse riding.?
