Tweedside is a two bedroom property on the superb Milne Graden Estate overlooking the River Tweed and is everything a cottage should be - petit and perfectly formed, furnished in a classic style with a cosy open fire. Perfect for fishing parties.
This cottage is part of a hamlet of properties comprising Hamilton House, School House and Swan's Nest. These properties can be hired collectively for larger groups wishing to holiday together but maintain a degree of privacy. The ground floor has been opened up to make best use of the space. Upstairs the bedrooms are compact but comfortable with fitted wardrobes built into the eaves. The ground floor bathroom boasts the best vista of any bathroom we know.
Outside guests can enjoy amazing 180 degree views of the river from the garden - look out for the odd deer, otter, kingfisher and the occasional leaping salmon.
Activities & Attractions
With the famous River Tweed on the doorstep, this is an ideal base for fishing parties. The estate’s own beat which is available to guests at additional cost (subject to availability) extends to about 1.4 miles of single bank fishing. Milne Graden is primarily a salmon beat but has good runs of grilse and sea trout through the summer months. A trout rod and reel are available on request. Other prime beats include Tillmouth, Lennel, Ladykirk and The Lees.
If you can tear yourself away from the view, the local area has plenty of other delights in store. From here you can explore a historic landscape, punctuated by imposing castles like Floors, Bamburgh and Alnwick, the evocative ruins of abbeys at Kelso, Melrose and Dryburgh, and stately mansions at nearby Paxton, Manderston and Mellerstain. Head to the coast for miles of golden sands and secluded rocky coves. Favourite spots include the stunning beach at Bamburgh, the magnificent views from the cliffs at St Abbs and the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne. And for foodies the Collingwood Arms at Cornhill-on-Tweed and the Allanton Inn, are both noted for their local cuisine.
Just down the road, the attractive village of Norham has a local shop, bakery, butcher, two pubs and a gunsmith. You’ll find more extensive local shopping at Coldstream, four miles away, and the nearby and picturesque market town of Kelso. Edinburgh is only an hour’s drive or 45 minutes on the train from nearby Berwick upon Tweed.
The accommodation comprises two bedrooms; one with a double bed (4' 6") and one with two twin beds (3') or one superking bed (6'). Both have built-in storage space. There is a cloakroom on the first floor and a ground floor bathroom (bath with shower over, WC and basin). Detachable grab rails are available on request.
The convivial, open-plan ground floor offers a cosy seating area with open fire, dining area and fully-equipped kitchen with stainless steel electric oven and hob, dishwasher and refrigerator (NB no ice box or freezer facility) and microwave. WiFi is provided.
There is a utility / boot room adjacent to the kitchen with a washing machine with dryer.
Garden and grounds
To the rear of the house is a lawned garden with access to the river. There is a gravelled area with parking for two cars.
Catering and housekeeping
Catering at Tweedside is entirely flexible. The house can be taken on a self-catered basis or treat yourself to a little luxury and book a catering package - part or fully catered options can be arranged, including a homemade meal and wine delivery service and picnic hamper delivery for fishing parties. Facilities are available for additional cleaning or linen changes throughout guest's stay at additional cost.
A travel cot and high chair are available on request.
One dog is welcome at Tweedside. We would ask that dogs are kept to the downstairs, uncarpeted areas of the house.
