Nestling high in the hills above the little Borders hamlet of Ashkirk (pub/restaurant), between Selkirk (5m) and Hawick, is Wollrig Cottage. Stone-built and in its own enclosed and sloping gardens (furniture), where a stream tumbles under two little humpback bridges, it could have come right out of a fairy tale.
Inside, there is a snug sitting room with open fire, a large farmhouse-style kitchendiner and upstairs, two attractive bedrooms with coombed ceilings and one with en suite shower. The house is double glazed and a superb new sun room has now been added, perfect for relaxing and watching the many birds who frequent the peaceful garden.
There are lovely walks right from the door. If you prefer four legs, there is a riding school at Ashkirk, or if you'd rather walk in pursuit of a wee white ball, there is an excellent golf course at the Woll, just a mile or so away. The area is steeped in history and awash with stately homes, keeps and castles, all open to the public.
