Wildlife paintings by Fochabers artist, Alanda Calmus, a contemporary realist painter whose own distinctive style is characterised by realist subjects combined with abstract backgrounds. Over the past year Alanda has been experimenting with different, less controllable media in an effort to explore a more loose approach to her work. The main subject of this exhibition, “A Cocktail of Sorts”, is the result of this experimentation. Her “Beverage Based” artworks are painted predominantly using various teas, coffee, wine and sometimes even Bols Blue Curaçao. These are then enhanced with a little ink, pastel or charcoal. In many of her most enjoyable pieces, the splashes were made first with no plan as to what the subject of the painting would be. Once dried these splashes formed their own shapes from which an animal emerged.
Also on display are some traditional style watercolour pieces and pastel paintings and some works that combine those two media in a more modern approach.
