Conductor Sergey Smbatyan

Khachaturian Spartacus Suite No.2
Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, Op.64
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op.36
What a superb programme the Armenians are bringing on their first-ever Town Hall visit! Containing the soaring melody that became the famous theme to TV’s Onedin Line, Khachaturian’s music to the ballet Spartacus is as unforgettable as the only violin concerto from Mendelsohnn, with its popular and achingly beautiful second movement.
Tchaikovsky’s 4th symphony, though not as familiar as the 5th or 6th, dates from the feverish year of musical activity after the breakdown of his marriage and is considered his ‘breakthrough’ symphonic work, in which he first succeeded in creating a form which matched the brilliance of his melodic gifts.
