Black and White Photography (Beginners)

Four week course

Learn how to process your black and white film, make contact sheets and explore black and white printing. Bring an exposed Ilford FP4 film with you and find out how easy it can be.

What will be covered?
We'll be using a darkroom to process traditional black-and-white film, loading development tanks and mixing chemicals appropriately. We'll also make contact sheets and then explore black-and-white printing of 5 by 7 inch prints with high-quality Kaiser enlargers.

What should I bring?
A 35 mm Ilford FP4 film, available from photography shops. The film should be exposed before you arrive for the class so that you are ready to start work in the darkroom. Shoot the whole film on a subject of your choice – if you need advice on this call the Print Studio on 01382 909242. We also have cameras you can borrow if you don’t have your own.

What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing, we'll provide aprons. Please note no sandals or open-toed footwear in the Print Studio.

What should I expect?
Expect to work in low light levels as we'll be working in a darkroom, in complete darkness at one point. If you think you may find this difficult let the tutor know beforehand, most people adjust very quickly though. Aside from this expect to produce some good photographs and to leave with a feeling of achievement.
