Nearly 30 years ago now in 1989, a certain Nigel Grainge of Ensign Records came up with the idea of putting two up and coming singer songwriters from different countries, who had never met each other, together to make a record. These two hopefuls were Boo Hewerdine from the UK and Darden Smith from the USA. As it happened they got on very well and released the excellent album 'Evidence', which garnered some really good reviews.
Since then they have both prospered in their careers with Boo fronting his band The Bible in the 1980's and writing with and for many UK artistes including Chris Difford and Eddi Reader. Boo has also been nominated for the prestigious Ivor Novello Award, and we don't get many of those folks at Tingewick.
Darden has also pursued a successful musical career and is now well known for his SongwritingWith:Soldiers programme. This organizes weekend retreats during which professional songwriters are paired with veterans and active duty service members who share stories about their experiences of combat and the return home. Working collaboratively, the musicians and soldiers turn those stories into songs.
On the 19th October 2013 we got these two guys together again in Tingewick to perform and it was one of the best shows we have ever had there. Not only was music magical but also they were both extremely funny. It was a wonderful night, which we aim to recapture this time.
