The School of Modern Languages, in collaboration with The Byre Theatre, offers an exciting programme of events drawn from literature, film and cultures across world. Showcasing some of the cutting-edge research currently being carried out by the School of Modern Languages, we bring together artists, filmmakers, writers and academics in celebration and contemplation of exactly what it is that brings us together – languages! All events are open to university staff and students and the general public.
Emotions and Gender in Techno and Electronic Dance Music Culture
This event explores the complex mix of emotions at the heart of the global techno and electronic dance music (EDM) scenes. Techno has grown from an underground movement in Detroit and Berlin into an international cultural phenomenon, and representations of the genre show a strongly gendered culture in which norms requiring elaborate displays of euphoria exist alongside feelings of isolation, self-doubt, frustration and other negative emotions. Join us for an evening of music and discussions, including a literary reading by acclaimed German writer and musician, Thomas Meinecke.
