At Hospitalfield in Arbroath the artist Patrick Allan-Fraser (1813-1890) remodelled a 13th century hospital to create his 19th century Arts and Crafts home. The walled gardens have been cultivated from the early medieval period, from the medicinal and the orchard to the Victorian passion for collecting ferns. This lovely flower and vegetable garden, set against the red sandstone neo Gothic architecture is maintained by a part time Gardener and a team of volunteers through their Garden Club. They run an international cultural programme rooted in the contemporary visual arts, inspired by the long and extraordinary heritage of the site.
This is a fundraising event for the open garden charity Scotland’s Gardens Scheme which raises money for hundreds of local charities.
