Quirky Clocks and Amazing Automata… This is woodcrafter Ian Graham’s quixotic collection, now brought together in an exhibition where the visitors do the work - fiddling with clocks and driving crazy contraptions!
Nowadays, we have electronic digital clocks - amazingly reliable and accurate, but they lack the clunky charm of old-school mechanics. That’s what you’ll see here - pendulums, escapements, cogs, ratchets... But the decorative qualities of clocks are not forgotten. Some designs take their inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement, and the Glasgow style of the MacIntosh era.
Ian’s wooden Automata depict the secret activities of that little icon of British wildlife - the hedgehog. Art, Music, Sport… Who knew? Cams, levers, twisty bits, and more gears - they all work together to produce surprising and often amusing results. Just turn the handles and see for yourself!
