A concert for Lent
28th March 2021, 3pm
John Adams: Christian zeal and activity
Nico Muhly: Bow Thine ear, o Lord
Mendelssohn: Symphony no. 5 in D minor, Reformation
Haydn: Nelson mass
A programme to encourage reflection, showing the role of Christian faith in the life and work of different composers. Westart with a pair of recent works examining a contemporary spirituality (available at the time of writing as audio files only) before turning to the young Mendelssohn’s response to the 300th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Haydn’s best-known mass sees us finish in less certain times, with a superb performance (at Greyfriars Kirk) showing his sense of unease at the height of the Napoleonic Wars, even as he draws comfort from his deeply-held beliefs.
At the time of writing, the box office remains closed until further notice, so tickets (free of charge) will be available online at www.usherhall.co.uk until 3pm on the day of each concert. Programme notes and a link to the relevant playlist on the Usher Hall YouTube channel will be sent by email at 2pm that same day, or 3pm for any tickets booked later.
