A concert for Lent
28th March 2021, 3pm
John Adams: Christian zeal and activity
Nico Muhly: Bow Thine ear, o Lord
Mendelssohn: Symphony no. 5 in D minor, Reformation
Haydn: Nelson mass
The spirituality of John Adams and Nico Muhly contrasts vividly with the young Mendelssohn’s response to the 300th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, while Haydn’s faith (a source of much joy to the composer) is tested in a mass written at the height of the Napoleonic Wars.
