Portraits in music
25th April 2021, 3pm
Britten: Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge
Rachmaninov: Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini
Tchaikovsky: Manfred symphony
A tribute to music’s ability to depict character, whether evoking Britten’s much-loved teacher or Tchaikovsky’s take on Byron’s wanderer, expertly captured by Vasily Petrenko. As for Rachmaninov’s pseudo-concerto, it served as the inspiration for a little-known ballet by Balanchine about Paganini and his supposed deal with the Devil.
At the time of writing, the box office remains closed until further notice, so tickets (free of charge) will be available online at www.usherhall.co.uk until 3pm on the day of each concert. Programme notes and a link to the relevant playlist on the Usher Hall YouTube channel will be sent by email at 2pm that same day, or 3pm for any tickets booked later.
