The hand of destiny
31st January 2021, 3pm
Bizet: Carmen suite no. 1
Beethoven: Symphony no. 5 in C minor
Tchaikovsky: Symphony no. 4 in F minor
This programme puts the spotlight on a trio of very different responses: while Carmen refuses to be cowed by hers and remains defiant to the very end, the exact nature of Tchaikovsky’s complicated relationship with it (right down to its eventual outcome) will depend on Maestro Gergiev’s interpretation. What a contrast to Beethoven, who grabs his by the scruff of the neck before conquering it – something he could achieve more evidently in music than in life.
At the time of writing, the box office remains closed until further notice, so tickets (free of charge) will be available online at www.usherhall.co.uk until 3pm on the day of each concert. Programme notes and a link to the relevant playlist on the Usher Hall YouTube channel will be sent by email at 2pm that same day, or 3pm for any tickets booked later.
