A young Sicilian villager returns from the wars to find his fiancée has married another. Unable to resist her former lover she is soon back in his bed, but her husband is distraught and intent on revenge… Effortlessly evoking the harsh romance of Sicilian life, Cavalleria rusticana is a work of pulsing passion and rich lyricism. In this semi-staged performance, Stuart Stratford chooses to pair it not with Pagliacci, as is often the case, but with the Scottish Opera premiere of a lesser-known work by Leoncavallo, Zingari. With a parallel narrative that sees another love triangle go disastrously wrong, it is based on Pushkin’s The Gypsies – a fiery testament to Leoncavallo’s love of combining music and poetry.
