Doyenne Duo brings a programme by lyrical masters; French flute favourites Cécile Chaminade, Philippe Gaubert and Michel Blavet, American Daniel Dorff’s spiritual odyssey Three Lakes, dreamy improvisations of English composer Ian Clarke and François Borne’s Fantasy on Bizet’s tragic heroine Carmen. The programme begins with the majesty and fireworks of the Concertino for flute and piano by the first lady of French flute repertoire, Cécile Chaminade. The wistful elegance of French Baroque virtuoso Michel Blavet’s Sonata “La Lumagne” will be followed by American composer Daniel Dorff’s programmatic suite Three Lakes depicting the lakes of his childhood in the Northeast of America. Lyrical, charming and Debussy-esque, Gaubert’s 3rd Sonata will be followed by Ian Clarke’s popular Hypnosisbased on improvisations with Clarke, David Hicks and Simon Painter during their studio sessions and time performing together as a rock group. Bringing the programme to a close, will be the tour-de-force, showstopper by François Borne, in his take on well-known melodies from Bizet’s opera Carmen. Equal parts fiery and melodious -a programme not to be missed.
Exceptional in their own right, flautist Pamela Vliek Martchev and pianist Toni James, are magical as Doyenne Duo. Pamela Martchev has performed under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit and Esa-Pekka Salonen, among others, with the LA Times writing “you could almost feel her breath transformed into music”. Toni James has been described in the Boston Musical Intelligencer as “poised to join the ranks of the finest” of her generation and has won “Recording of the Year” in Fanfare Magazine and MusicWeb International. Natives of Long Island New York and Paisley Scotland respectively, they met on the faculty of the School of Music and Dance at San Diego State University, giving their recital debut at the San Diego Winds’ annual San Diego Summer Music Institute in 2018. Their growing profile, has seen them perform throughout the Southern California region and has them embarking on their first Scottish tour September 2019.
