In 1967 a small group of sporty minded gentlemen met in the Stuart Hotel in the town centre to discuss the formation of a committee to help to promote sport for all ages in our town. The Stuart Hotel is no longer there but the committee now known as East Kilbride Sports Council and 52 years later continue to operate very successfully within the sporting community.
East Kilbride and district has produced some excellent sporting talent competing successfully all over the world. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, 8 athletes from East Kilbride and District represented Scotland.
The annual sports awards evening continues to recognise our sporting talent from all ages – primary school kids to the adult and club categories.
The evening is compared by Cliff Smith, a familiar face in our community who adds his own funny anecdotes to the script. Music during the evening is provided by the fabulous Calderglen High School Jazz Band under the leadership of music teacher Susan Menzies.
