This lecture, held by Dr. Michelle Foot from the University of Edinburgh, will present the artworks of Jane Stewart Smith in context. The state of Spiritualism in Victorian Edinburgh is important for understanding both Smith’s oil and watercolour paintings and Dr. Michelle Foot will go on to explain Smith’s symbolic picture, ‘The Dawn of Peace’, which celebrates the triumph of good over the forces of evil. The lecture will also explore the purpose of Smith’s ‘Bygone Days’ watercolour series and reveal how the artist’s Spiritualist beliefs informed her interests in painting Edinburgh’s historic old town and the spirits of the past.
The event is intended to provide an informative and descriptive background into Spiritual Art and should fuel discussions for a Q&A Session.
The lecture will start at 4 pm, followed by a Q&A session. Wine and nibbles will be offered from 5.30pm.
