The Children’s Festival opens with Family Encounters, a day of free pop-up performances and arts activities for families. This year, Family Encounters will include a strand for New Stories created by emerging artists. These site-specific theatre or dance performances will surprise, challenge, delight and offer a fresh perspective to young audiences.
Performance ideas will be chosen via an open-call and will prioritise stories that feature under-represented voices, including the voices of children, multicultural communities, recent migrants to Scotland and disabled people. In addition, artists will be encouraged to experiment with how they tell stories, including using non-verbal performance, dance, music, digital technologies and interactive elements.
This New Stories strand will enrich the Festival’s Family Encounters programme by bringing fresh stories told in innovative ways that will engage children of all ages. The event will be accessible to all, including those with different needs and ways of experiencing the world.
