Our first Five O’Clock verses of 2019 brings together two poets from Edinburgh and London respectively. Alan Spence is an award-winning poet, playwright, novelist and short story writer, particularly known for his work in haikus and other Japanese forms. In 2017 he was appointed Edinburgh Makar, the poet laureate for the city, and in 2018 he was awarded the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun by the government of Japan. Fiona Moore has been shortlisted for the 2019 T.S. Eliot Prize for the immediate and eerie poems of her first full-length collection, The Distal Point(HappenStance 2018), which was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation for autumn 2018. She was an assistant editor at The Rialto and is currently on the editorial board of Magma.
