Join us at The Drygate for an evening of art, music, and community inspired by Vent, the debut album by Laura Jane Wilkie. Vent explores waulking songs—traditional work songs sung by women in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland while beating tweed. These songs allowed women to keep rhythm while venting frustrations, sharing stories, and building community.
Laura adapted these songs for the fiddle, collaborating with tradition bearer and one-women-ceilidh Rona Lightfoot and drawing on the rich history found in Scottish archives. Through Vent, Laura delves into themes of safety, power, love, humour, and freedom—individually and collectively. She will perform with Sarah Hayes, Ian Carr, Joe Rattray, Rachel Sermanni, Little Acres in collaboration with Flos Collective CIC.
Flos Collective CIC is a social enterprise, directed by Catherine Allison, Esme Stewart and Pippa Blundell, which supports and celebrates women and non-binary creatives in Glasgow. As part of this event they will curate an exhibition of artists whose work is representative of the themes explored in Vent. The exhibition will be open throughout and after the performance accompanied by music from local DJs.
