Join me for this 6 session course to discover the joy of making books by hand using remnant and recycled materials. Together we’ll explore 5 different book structures, incorporating fabric, leather/pleather, beads, buttons, decorative and vintage papers. With the last class reserved for adding finishing touches to our books and celebrating our creations over a well deserved cuppa!
This course is suitable if you’re a complete beginner or if you have dabbled in bookbinding before – everyone is welcome! The wonderfully addictive craft of bookbinding goes hand in hand with lots of other crafts too, so if you’re a printer, writer, stitcher or paper crafter it is likely that you already have lots of materials just waiting to become books – let me show you how!
The books we will make in this course can be used as notebooks, sketchbooks, journals and Artists’ Books as well as offering a way to collate and display artwork/writing. Handmade books also make for great presents – throughout the course we will explore different ways of personalising your books and giving them a theme so each one has its own unique character.
This course includes the following book structures:
Japanese stab binding
Exposed long stitch binding
Mini Casebound book
V stitch binding
Concertina book
The classes will be held in the fabulous Ink on Mesh Print Studio at The Heart of Newhaven, Edinburgh (on the 7, 10, 11 & 16 bus route), with colourful artwork on the walls and kettle on hand for tea and coffee top ups to fuel your creativity! My studio is just down the hall so there will also be an opportunity to visit Bookbinding with Cass HQ and explore my collection of handmade books.
All tools, materials and refreshments are included in the cost of the course with the option to purchase a bookbinding toolkit which provides everything you need to continue your bookbinding journey at home.
My mission is to make the craft of bookbinding fun and accessible, so you can expect a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, lot’s of one-to-one guidance, an opportunity to connect with other crafty folk and techniques that you can replicate easily at home without the need for expensive tools and materials.
A series of follow up video tutorials and list of recommended suppliers is also included in the cost of this course – a great resource that you can refer back to again and again for a reminder of the stitching techniques and where to source materials for future bookbinding projects.
Attending a creative workshop can be a great way to spend time with a crafty pal – invite someone to join you on this course and use my special ‘bring a friend’ discount, book two places (for you and a friend) and use the following code to get £10 off: Intro2for1
