Our Saturday evening concert once again features young Scottish jazz musicians who have been gaining recognition over the past coupe of years after getting together at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.
The trio is led by Ben Shankland, a young Edinburgh born pianist and composer who made his debut at Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival as part of the 2021 Introducing Stage.
He continues to make a name on the Scottish jazz scene and also plays with Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra
His compositions show much influence from traditional recordings, but bring a fresh contemporary jazz sound.
Ben is joined by two of Scotland’s finest young musicians - Ewan Hastie on bass and Chun-Wei Kang on drums
Bass player, Ewan Hastie, is in his fourth year of a Bachelor of Music degree on the RCS Jazz programme – and is an alumnus of the Junior Conservatoire of Music
He was announced as the winner of the BBC Young Jazz Musician 2022 in November last year
Born in Edinburgh and raised in Kirkcaldy, Ewan started playing the bass guitar at the age of 12 and took up the double bass during his time with the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra.
He gained touring experience with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, visiting Skye, Glasgow, Belfast and the Sligo Jazz Festival, eventually enrolling at RCS.
Ewan was also presented with the Mark McKergow Prize for Jazz Improvisation at the RCS Jazz Awards, awarded for hard work, diligence and creativity, and was selected to go to Nuremberg, Germany for a European jazz workshop.
Chun-Wei Kang is a young drummer based in Glasgow. He is kept very busy in various groups on the lively jazz scene there
