Beyond Hornel: Scottish Photographers in Meiji Japan
When Edward Hornel and George Henry travelled to Japan in 1893, they encountered a community of photographers that supported their own artistic pursuits in the country. Their visit was particularly timely, but Scottish photographers, artists, and merchants had long been involved in the growth and popularity of photography in Japan. Luke Gartlan is Senior Lecturer in the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews. He is the author of A Career of Japan: Baron Raimund von Stillfried and Early Yokohama Photography (Brill, 2016), and also served for six years as editor of the journal History of Photography.
