Scotch Whisky and the Jacobites
“Freedom and whisky gang thegither" These words were written by Robert Burns in 1786 as a plea to Scottish MPs to lower taxes on whisky. For the previous 100 years Scotch Whisky had been tied to Jacobitism and the idea of rebellion in many ways; from the establishment of Ferintosh Distillery to the practice of illicit distillation and the secret recipe created for Bonnie Prince Charlie that we now know as Drambuie.
In this talk Alex Thomson, whisky tourism professional, will explore these connections and discuss the impact this has on the modern Scotch Whisky industry and its practices.
