WHISPERS is a surprisingly timely story of Victorian London, in which the origins of the Women's Rights movement are mixed with an exploration of the roots of evil, referring to the nineteenth century penny dreadful fiction. Incarcerated in a lunatic asylum, Mrs P. M. Jones tells her story using a handful of props from a suitcase while jumping backwards and forwards in time. Years of emotional and physical abuse, forbidden desires and the inability to oppose cruel laws have driven her insane. Is her life a series of poor decisions - or a conscious struggle for liberation?
WHISPERS explores women’s lack of rights in Victorian times - an era in which a woman could be forced into a marriage where she has no control. The audience is taken on a journey from nineteenth century asylum to courtroom, monastery cell and the banks of the Thames while also exploring the mind of the character, with all its retrospection and introspection. In this haunting piece of theatre, the audience is asked to decide - is P. M. Jones victim, heroine or perpetrator?
Pat Zajac (Patrycja Zajac) - is a bilingual actress and theatre maker based in Edinburgh. More information about the artist:
