Making an Impression; Etchings from Dundee’s Permanent Collection 1850-1930 is the latest in our Winter Works on Paper displays. To complement our exhibition Impressed; 20th Century Artist Prints this fascinating display looks at the earlier Victorian and Edwardian taste for collecting artist prints and the establishment of etching as a fine art form in its own right. The artist print movement was a reaction to increasing mechanisation which meant printed images became easy to produce in huge quantities. Artists such as James McNeill Whistler and James McBey began to explore the special quality of the hand made and adopted the technique of etching - making original artist prints available to a new and growing audience of art collectors.
